Regulatory Policy Governing Science and Technology in the Food System
In a recent article published in Research Policy with Leland Glenna we examine the agricultural chemical and biotechnology firm Monsanto (now Bayer)’s efforts to distort the scientific peer-review process in order to manipulate the regulatory process, and consider the implications for the integrity of scientific peer review and public trust in science. In a previous article published in Rural Sociology, I expand on the concept of scientism: an attempt to apply the methods and approach of the natural sciences to matters of human social and political concern. My analysis shows how the agricultural biotech industry has used scientism to shape the public debate about controversial science and technology in the food system in order to advance their interests.
